1S0X1 Safety

Safety Specialists (1S0X1) are responsible for managing, conducting, and supervising safety programs. They analyze mishap causes and trends, assess risks, evaluate and inspect areas to mitigate mishap potentials, and conduct mishap investigations. These specialists provide risk management consultation and conduct safety education, playing a crucial role in maintaining the safety and well-being of Air Force personnel and assets.

Entry Requirements

  • ASVAB: Administrative score of 55
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift 40 lbs, normal color vision, clear speech, visual acuity correctable to 20/20, no claustrophobia, and must possess a valid state driver’s license.
  • Other: Prior qualification at the 5-skill level (or 3-skill level if no 5 level exists) in any AFSC, successful completion of a 10 duty-day assessment period with the local Safety Office, and a recommendation letter from the Ground Safety Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops, organizes, and directs safety activities, integrating safety requirements into organizational programs.
  • Conducts safety program evaluations, inspects facilities, and participates in mishap investigations.
  • Analyzes mishap data, performs trend analysis, and recommends corrective actions.
  • Provides safety consultation to commanders and supervisors, addressing technical directives and operational techniques.
  • Conducts safety education programs and distributes safety promotional materials.

Specialty Qualifications

  • Knowledge: Understanding of safety education, mishap prevention, human factors, industrial safety criteria, risk management, and mishap investigation techniques is mandatory.
  • Education: Completion of high school or GED equivalency is required. Additional education or training in safety-related fields is beneficial.
  • Training: Mandatory completion of a basic safety course for award of AFSC 1S031.
  • Experience: Experience in conducting safety programs, performing inspections and investigations, and applying risk assessment techniques is required for advancement within the AFSC.

Safety Specialists ensure the implementation of effective safety measures, the prevention of mishaps, and the promotion of a safety-conscious culture within the Air Force, contributing significantly to the overall mission readiness and operational success.
