Overview of 1Z1X1 – Pararescue (PJ) AFSC

1Z1X1, Pararescue (PJ), personnel are highly trained experts who perform, plan, lead, supervise, instruct, and evaluate pararescue activities. Their primary role is to provide Personnel Recovery (PR) in diverse environments, including mountain, desert, arctic, urban, jungle, and water. Pararescue Specialists operate under various conditions, including friendly, denied, hostile, or sensitive areas, day or night. They are trained to provide assistance in survival, evasion, resistance, and escape (SERE), offer emergency trauma and field medical care, and ensure the safety and recovery of personnel and materials when aircraft recovery is not possible.

Prerequisites

  • ASVAB Score: General: 49
  • Strength: Ability to lift 70 lbs
  • Successful completion of the Pararescue physical ability and stamina test (PAST)
  • Certification as an emergency medical technician
  • Routine access to Secret material or similar environment

Technical Training

  • Location: Multiple, including Lackland AFB, Navy Diving and Salvage Training Center, Fairchild AFB, Ft Benning, Ft Brag, and Yuma Proving Grounds
  • Duration: Varied, comprehensive training over several months
  • CCAF Degree: Personnel Recovery

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct mission planning, preparation, and execution across six geographic disciplines
  • Perform SERE, emergency medical care, and security operations
  • Execute insertion, infiltration, exfiltration, and extraction functions
  • Supervise and perform parachute operations and water rescues
  • Provide photographic documentation and intelligence information

Specialty Qualifications

  • Knowledge: Required knowledge includes mission planning, medical care, parachuting, water operations, NBC defense, SERE, and more.
  • Education: High school completion is desirable, as well as certification in emergency medical or paramedic courses.
  • Training: Comprehensive training through several specialized courses is mandatory.
  • Experience: Progression through various levels of experience, from performing pararescue duties to supervising and managing pararescue functions.
