The 2W2X1 AFSC, also known as Nuclear Weapons specialists, are tasked with the maintenance, inspection, storage, handling, modification, accountability, and repair of nuclear weapons and their components. This includes general and specialized test and handling equipment. These specialists ensure the safety, security, and reliability of the nuclear arsenal, which is critical to national defense.

Training and Education:

  • Tech School Duration: 67 Days at Sheppard AFB.
  • CCAF Degree: Munitions Systems Technology.

Entry Requirements for 2W2X1:

  • ASVAB Scores: Mechanical: 60.
  • Physical Strength: 40 lbs.
  • Other Requirements: Normal color vision, no record of domestic violence, must be screened for the Personnel Reliability Program (PRP), no record of emotional instability, and requires routine access to Top Secret materials.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintenance, inspection, and modification of nuclear weapons and components.
  • Storage, handling, and transportation of nuclear warheads, bombs, missiles, and associated equipment.
  • Compliance with safety, security, and environmental directives.
  • Emergency disablement or evacuation of nuclear weapons and components.
  • Inspection, maintenance, and operation of vehicles and material handling equipment used in nuclear weapons transport.
  • Planning, organizing, and evaluating nuclear weapon activities.

Specialty Qualifications:

  • Knowledge Requirements: Electrical and mechanical principles; safety and security requirements for nuclear weapons; interpreting technical data; handling hazardous materials.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED, with courses in mechanics, physics, or basic electricity being desirable.
  • Training: Mandatory completion of the Nuclear Weapons Apprentice Course and, for higher levels, the Nuclear Weapons Craftsman Course.
