What does a 3E8X1 do?

  • Performs EOD operations to mitigate the effects of hazardous EO, IEDs, and WMDs.
  • Employs specialized tools, techniques, and personal protective equipment to detect, identify, and dispose of hazardous devices.
  • Conducts reconnaissance, assessment, render safe, recovery, and disposal operations on ordnance and devices.
  • Supports various aerospace systems/vehicles, conventional munitions operations, and counter-IED (CIED) and counter-WMD operations.
  • Executes nuclear weapon response, UXO recovery operations, explosive range activities, and combat enabler for irregular warfare.
  • Provides support to defense support to civil authorities activities and very important person/special protective activities.

Tech School Duration and Location:

  • Tech School: 169 days at Sheppard AFB and Eglin AFB.
  • CCAF: Explosive Ordnance Disposal.

Requirements:

  • ASVAB: Mechanical - 47, General - 50
  • Strength: 80 lbs
  • Minimum height of 5’2”, maximum height 6’8”
  • No record of claustrophobia
  • Successful completion of the EOD physical ability and stamina test (PAST)
  • Minimum score of 30 required on EOD selection model completed in Tailored Adaptive Personality Assessment System (TAPAS)
  • No record of emotional instability
  • Normal depth perception
  • Normal color vision
  • Secret clearance with Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Planning, organizing, and directing EOD operations.
  • Developing operational orders/plans, instructions, and safety plans.
  • Conducting counter-IED (CIED) and counter-WMD operations.
  • Executing nuclear weapon response and UXO recovery operations.
  • Engaging in explosive range activities and operational range clearances.
  • Supporting irregular warfare and defense support to civil authorities activities.
  • Conducting very important person/special protective activities.

Specialty Qualifications:

  • Knowledge in various areas including EOD flight organization, explosives and demolition procedures, range clearance operations, WMD response, and combat operations.
  • Education: Completion of high school or equivalent, with desirable courses in physics, mechanics, and basic electronic theory.
  • Training: Completion of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal apprentice course and Explosive Ordnance Disposal craftsman course.
  • Experience: Progression through different levels of experience involving operating EOD tools/equipment, executing response activities, and managing EOD functions or operations.
