The 3N1X1 AFSC involves managing, supervising, and performing as an instrumentalist, music arranger, vocalist, or audio and lighting engineer in military band activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Instrumentalists perform on one or more musical instruments in various musical performing units such as marching band, concert band, jazz band, etc.
- Arrangers adapt music into customized arrangements and create original music for different musical ensembles.
- Vocalists read, sing, and memorize vocal parts for public performance in units like chorus, jazz band, etc.
- Audio Engineers operate and maintain audio reinforcement, recording, lighting, video, and multimedia equipment used during rehearsals and performances.
- All members drill with the marching band and perform under conductor or drum major direction.
Specialty Qualifications:
- Knowledge:
- Instrumentalists must know musical conducting, rehearsal techniques, transpositions, and be able to read printed music.
- Vocalists should have knowledge of musical conducting, rehearsal techniques, transpositions, reading printed music, and singing in foreign languages.
- Librarians need knowledge of library science and the ability to read printed music.
- Arrangers must know music theory, transpositions, capabilities of authorized instruments, and arranging/composing music using industry standard software.
- Audio Engineers need knowledge of sound reinforcement theory and application, lighting, video, and multimedia technology.
- Education: Completion of courses in music theory, music history, harmony, ear training, transposition (for instrumentalists, vocalists, and arrangers), electronics, recording techniques, and musical editing (for audio engineers).
- Experience: Progression through different skill levels, involving performing as an instrumentalist, music arranger, vocalist, or audio and lighting engineer, and experience directing, planning, and performing administrative functions with bands, choruses, or similar groups.
