5J0X1 Paralegal

5J0X1 is the Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC) for paralegals. Air Force paralegals work under the supervision of an attorney and must comply with both the American Bar Association and the Air Force Rules. They manage and perform legal functions. Air Force paralegals: Supervise the administration of legal services and court-reporting activities Plan, organize, and direct legal services personnel in the areas of: Administrative law Military justice Operational law Claims Office management Airmen enter AFSC 5J0X1 laterally from another career field. They function primarily as assistants to the JAG officers.

Minimum Education

  • High School Seniors: Can apply at the end of their junior year, needing to be 17 or older.
  • General Requirements: A high school diploma, GED, or 15 college semester hours.

ASVAB Requirements

  • Score: A minimum of 51 in the General category.

Qualifications for Direct Accessions

  • Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • A minimum typing speed of 25 words per minute.
  • No significant mental health concerns, substance abuse, domestic violence, child abuse records.
  • Clean legal record, with minor exceptions for traffic violations.
  • Must undergo a Tier 3 Investigation for security clearance.
  • Completion of 7.5 weeks of Basic Military Training.
  • Age requirement: between 17 and 42 years.

Qualifications for Retraining

  • Current passing fitness score.
  • An AF Form 422 showing a PULHES score of at least 333333 and a medical recommendation.
  • Similar communication, legal, and health standards as for direct accessions.
  • Must be interviewed and observed for 10 days by the wing legal office, with necessary approvals.
