18Z Special Forces Senior Sergeant

The Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) 18Z is a Special Forces Senior Sergeant. The 18Z is the Senior Sergeant of the Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA). The 18Z is responsible for all operational aspects of the ODA. They are usually a master sergeant and are typically the most experienced Green Beret on the detachment.

The 18Z supervises, instructs, and trains the other Special Forces (SF) members. They also advise the Detachment commander on operations and training matters. The 18Z provides leadership, tactical and technical guidance, and professional support to subordinate NCOs.

The 18Z performs joint, interagency, multi-national, combined, and coalition planning. They also supervise operations for higher headquarters, major commands, and joint commands.
