640A Food Safety Officer

The Army MOS 640A is a Veterinary Services Food Safety Officer. They are responsible for preventing food-borne illnesses and ensuring the DOD procures safe, quality foods. They also serve as technical advisors and program managers for commanders at major medical commands.

The 640A manages and directs military food safety and quality assurance programs. They organize and conduct commercial sanitation audits and military sanitation inspections. They also serve as a commander’s subject matter expert on all matters dealing with food safety and defense.

The 640A was originally called Food Inspection Technician (MOS 051A). In the mid-1980s, the specialty was renamed Veterinary Services Technician (MOS 640A).

The United States Army Veterinary Services is the Department of Defense Executive Agent for Food Safety. They also provide care to Military Working Dogs, ceremonial horses, working animals of many Department of Homeland Security organizations, and pets owned by service members.
