89D Explosive Ordnance Disposal Specialist
The Army MOS 89D is the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Specialist. EOD specialists are trained to locate, identify, and dispose of unexploded ordnance, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and weapons of mass destruction. They also gather intelligence on ordnance and IEDs for VIP missions.
EOD specialists are responsible for: Operations and training for seven companies with 2200 soldiers All aspects of training, parades, ceremonies, community projects, contingencies/mobilization, and special events for the battalion Directing the S2/3 portion of battalion Command Inspections Consolidated AIT graduation
EOD specialists are trained at a seven-week preparatory course on Fort Lee, Virginia. This is followed by a 34-week course at the Naval EOD School on Eglin Air Force Base, Florida.
EOD technicians need to be physically fit because they carry heavy equipment and work in an 80-pound bomb suit. They are also expected to integrate with special forces as necessary.
