The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) ended on June 1, 2024. Its monthly internet discount and connected-device discount are no longer available. There is no current ACP application or renewal. Older “ACP free tablet” instructions describe a past subsidy, not an active signup route.
What the old benefit meant
ACP formerly reduced the price of an eligible laptop, desktop computer, or tablet by up to $100 through a participating provider. The household had to contribute more than $10 and less than $50. That required contribution made it a discounted purchase, rather than a universal free-tablet benefit.
The former internet discount was up to $30 a month, or up to $75 on qualifying Tribal lands. Both forms of assistance ended with ACP.
What can help now?
PCs for People and Human-I-T publish eligibility information for low-cost computers and other devices. Their prices, stock, and any donation opportunities are separate from Lifeline. Ask a school, library, or local community organization about loaned equipment or funded device assistance as well.
A wireless company’s tablet promotion is another possible offer to evaluate, but verify the actual price and service obligation directly. The company’s former ACP participation does not establish its present tablet stock or eligibility rules.
What Lifeline does and does not do
Lifeline discounts qualifying monthly phone or internet service. It has no federal tablet purchase fund. You do not need to sign up for a phone plan merely to investigate a separate nonprofit tablet offer.
Lifeline eligibility is separate: household income at or below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines, or participation in SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit, or specified Tribal programs. Former ACP enrollment does not automatically qualify a household.
If you need service assistance, start with USAC’s application instructions. California, Oregon, and Texas have state-specific processes. After approval, choose a participating provider serving your address and complete enrollment with that company. Check the total monthly charge, data allowance, and any equipment cost before agreeing.
Confirm an offer before sharing documents
Read the organization’s current eligibility page and document list. Ask whether the device is sold, donated, or loaned; whether a monthly plan is required; and whether shipping, activation, or return charges apply. Verify the exact model and whether it has mobile-network capability or only Wi-Fi.
Approval for a service discount is not confirmation of a tablet order. Use the provider’s written order details for delivery and activation instructions.
