The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) ended on June 1, 2024. Its internet and device discounts are no longer available, and new applications are closed.
What happened to ACP?
ACP replaced the Emergency Broadband Benefit on December 31, 2021. It ran out of funding in 2024. Claims that Congress extended these benefits through 2025 are incorrect.
- February 8, 2024: new enrollments stopped.
- April 2024: the last fully funded service month.
- May 2024: reduced support was available during the final month.
- June 1, 2024: the program ended.
What benefits did it provide?
Eligible households previously received up to $30 per month toward internet service, or up to $75 on qualifying Tribal lands. Participating providers could also offer a one-time discount of up to $100 on a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet. The customer had to contribute more than $10 and less than $50. This was not a cash voucher or an entitlement to a free smartphone.
These amounts describe the former program. They cannot be claimed now.
Where to look for help now
Lifeline has separate eligibility rules: household income at or below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines, or participation in SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit, or specified Tribal programs. Former ACP enrollment alone does not qualify a household.
Lifeline helps pay for eligible monthly service. It does not recreate ACP’s $100 device discount. A provider may offer a device promotion, but check the price, model, stock, and service conditions before enrolling.
For home internet, ask providers serving your address about their own income-based plans. Compare the total monthly price, equipment fees, data limits, and any price increase after a promotion. Provider programs are separate from federal benefits.
How to apply for current assistance
Start at Lifeline Support to check the application process for your state. After approval, select a participating company and arrange for it to apply the discount. California, Oregon, and Texas have state-specific application processes.
If you already receive Lifeline, keep that benefit up to date; you do not need to submit an ACP application. Before changing carriers, confirm that the new company can transfer your number and activate your existing device.
For a computer or tablet, check PCs for People and Human-I-T. These nonprofits publish their own eligibility and pricing rules. Low-cost devices are not necessarily free; any donated-device offer depends on funding and stock.
