The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) ended on June 1, 2024. Its monthly internet discount and connected-device discount are no longer available. There is no current ACP application or renewal. A list of “best ACP free phone providers” cannot identify a current ACP offer. Companies that formerly participated may now offer Lifeline or ordinary commercial plans with different terms.
What did ACP pay for?
ACP supported broadband service. Its former connected-device discount applied to eligible laptops, desktop computers, and tablets—not smartphones. A phone promotion from an ACP carrier was a separate offer, not a federally guaranteed phone model.
Check whether Lifeline can help
Lifeline discounts qualifying monthly service by up to $9.25, or up to $34.25 on qualifying Tribal lands. These maximum amounts depend on the eligible service. Free service, unlimited data, a phone, and international calling are not universal program benefits.
Lifeline eligibility is separate: household income at or below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines, or participation in SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit, or specified Tribal programs. Former ACP enrollment does not automatically qualify a household.
Compare providers serving your address
Use USAC’s Companies Near Me directory as a starting point. Confirm availability directly with each company, then compare:
- Coverage at home, work, and other places you use your phone.
- The monthly price after the Lifeline discount, including taxes or required fees.
- High-speed data limits, hotspot use, speed reductions, and any paid add-ons.
- Whether a phone is included; its model, condition, upfront price, and shipping charges.
- Bring-your-own-device compatibility, number transfer, unlocking, returns, and customer support.
An advertised device may depend on stock and location. Do not rely on a universal 30-minute approval or 7–10-day shipping promise; application review and fulfillment depend on the provider and documentation.
Apply and confirm the terms
Start with USAC’s application instructions. California, Oregon, and Texas have state-specific processes. After approval, choose a participating provider serving your address and complete enrollment with that company. Check the total monthly charge, data allowance, and any equipment cost before agreeing.
If you already receive Lifeline, understand the transfer rules before changing providers. Do not enroll twice to obtain an extra device: the federal program generally permits one benefit per household.
Are there current ACP services?
No. A company’s past ACP participation does not make its present offer an ACP benefit. If an advertisement still promises an ACP subsidy, verify it against the FCC’s closure notice before supplying personal information.
