  • For a full month of active service, a typical E-4-to-E-5 promotion around four years adds about $288 to $293 per month in taxable basic pay.
  • E-5 does not automatically qualify you for BAH; single Army and Marine E-5s generally remain subject to barracks requirements.
  • For members receiving full standard BAS, the 2026 enlisted rate is $476.95 per month at both E-4 and E-5, so promotion adds no BAS.
  • E-5 basic pay for a full month of active service tops out at $4,421.70 per month after over 12 years of service.
  • Reserve and National Guard members normally receive drill pay instead of a full monthly basic-pay amount unless serving on qualifying active orders.
  • Reenlistment bonuses and special pays depend on specialty, assignment, qualification, and current service policy—not E-5 rank alone.

Full-month E-5 basic pay runs from $3,342.90 to $4,421.70

In 2026, E-5 basic pay for a full month of active service ranges from $3,342.90 to $4,421.70 per month, based on cumulative years of service. A promotion at the over-3 or over-4 mark adds $288.30 to $293.40 per month in taxable basic pay.

Housing can add more than the basic-pay increase, but E-5 does not automatically qualify you for BAH. Your pay grade, dependency status, and permanent-duty-station location determine the published locality rate. Your assignment to or availability of adequate government quarters determines whether full BAH is payable, while branch and command housing policies affect when you may leave government quarters.

2026 E-5 full-month basic pay by years of service

The 2026 DFAS basic pay table sets the same E-5 basic-pay rates across the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard. An Army sergeant receives the same basic pay as an E-5 in another service with equal time in service.

Cumulative serviceE-5 monthly basic payE-5 annual basic pay for 12 full months
2 years or less$3,342.90$40,114.80
Over 2$3,598.20$43,178.40
Over 3$3,775.80$45,309.60
Over 4$3,946.80$47,361.60
Over 6$4,110.00$49,320.00
Over 8$4,299.90$51,598.80
Over 10$4,395.30$52,743.60
Over 12$4,421.70$53,060.40

These are gross basic-pay figures before federal and applicable state taxes, allotments, retirement contributions, and other deductions. They exclude BAH, BAS, bonuses, and special pays. You can compare every grade on the 2026 military enlisted pay chart.

Reserve and National Guard members normally use drill-pay rates

If you are a Reserve or National Guard member who is not serving on qualifying active orders, do not treat the full-month and annual amounts above as your normal pay. You normally receive drill pay instead. Use the DFAS enlisted drill-pay table for your grade and cumulative service.

The full-month basic-pay tables can apply when you serve on qualifying active orders. Check the type and duration of your orders before using an active-service monthly amount to estimate your pay.

The E-4-to-E-5 raise at the same years of service

Compare grades in the same longevity column. Comparing an E-4 over 3 with an E-5 over 4 exaggerates what promotion itself adds. The annual amounts below assume 12 full months of active service at the stated rate.

Cumulative serviceE-4 monthly payE-5 monthly payMonthly increaseAnnual increase
2 years or less$3,142.20$3,342.90$200.70$2,408.40
Over 2$3,303.00$3,598.20$295.20$3,542.40
Over 3$3,482.40$3,775.80$293.40$3,520.80
Over 4$3,658.50$3,946.80$288.30$3,459.60
Over 6$3,815.40$4,110.00$294.60$3,535.20
Over 8$3,815.40$4,299.90$484.50$5,814.00
Over 10$3,815.40$4,395.30$579.90$6,958.80
Over 12$3,815.40$4,421.70$606.30$7,275.60

At over 4 years, the promotion produces a 7.88% basic-pay increase. E-4 reaches its maximum 2026 basic-pay rate of $3,815.40 at the over-6-years column, while E-5 continues receiving longevity increases. The monthly gap reaches $484.50 at over 8, $579.90 at over 10, and $606.30 at over 12.

BAS does not increase with promotion. The 2026 enlisted BAS rate is $476.95 per month, or $5,723.40 annually, at both E-4 and E-5 for members receiving full standard BAS. You receive full BAS on the LES, but charges for government-provided meals can reduce the amount you keep. BAS is intended to feed you, not your dependents.

E-5 BAH depends on your branch and barracks status

There is no nationwide E-5 locality BAH amount. Three pieces of information determine the published rate:

  • Your permanent-duty-station ZIP code—not the ZIP where you choose to rent.
  • Your pay grade.
  • Whether you have dependents.

Assignment to or availability of adequate government quarters then determines whether full locality BAH is payable. The DoD BAH rules and rate lookup use only “with dependents” and “without dependents.” Having two children instead of one does not produce a higher dependent rate.

For members with dependents, 37 U.S.C. § 403(b)(5) requires one E-1-through-E-4 with-dependent rate in each military housing area. E-5 has its own published rate, so promotion can increase an existing BAH payment even when eligibility does not change.

BAH rate protection also matters. Under 37 U.S.C. § 403(b)(6), uninterrupted BAH generally may not be reduced solely because of promotion or an annual locality-rate decrease.

Promotion can produce a much bigger cash-flow increase if it also releases you from government quarters. The result depends on the service.

ServiceGeneral single-member housing policyWhat E-5 promotion usually means
ArmyE-5 and below generally use barracksPromotion normally does not create full BAH eligibility
Marine CorpsE-5 and below generally use barracksPromotion normally does not create full BAH eligibility
NavyUnaccompanied housing generally is not programmed for E-5 and aboveBAH eligibility can still depend on sea-versus-shore duty, local housing instructions, and assignment circumstances
Air ForceDorm requirement generally applies through E-4 with under 3 years of serviceE-5 is generally beyond the standard dorm threshold

This table covers only those four services. Space Force housing is administered through Department of the Air Force processes, and Coast Guard housing assignments follow Coast Guard and local housing policy. Detailed Coast Guard and Space Force unaccompanied-housing thresholds are outside this article’s scope.

Installation occupancy, overseas housing rules, dependency status, and a Certificate of Non-Availability can change the result. Some Army installations, including Fort Knox, require single E-1 through E-5 soldiers to use single-soldier housing.

A member without dependents in grade E-6 or below generally cannot reject adequate government quarters, move off base voluntarily, and collect full BAH. Get the command release or CNA and finance confirmation before signing a lease. E-5 insignia alone is not authorization.

Annual E-5 cash pay and allowances with BAS and BAH

If you are entitled to the full standard BAS and full locality BAH shown in the official lookup, use this formula for gross annual cash pay and allowances:

12 × (monthly basic pay + $476.95 BAS + applicable monthly BAH)

Meal collections can reduce spendable BAS, and assignment to government quarters can replace full locality BAH with a partial allowance or no full locality payment even when allowances appear on the LES.

Before BAH, 2026 E-5 basic pay for 12 full months of active service and full standard BAS produce these totals:

E-5 service bracketBasic pay per yearBAS per yearTotal before BAH
2 years or less$40,114.80$5,723.40$45,838.20
Over 2$43,178.40$5,723.40$48,901.80
Over 3$45,309.60$5,723.40$51,033.00
Over 4$47,361.60$5,723.40$53,085.00
Over 6$49,320.00$5,723.40$55,043.40
Over 8$51,598.80$5,723.40$57,322.20
Over 10$52,743.60$5,723.40$58,467.00
Over 12$53,060.40$5,723.40$58,783.80

Use the official BAH rate lookup to add the correct amount for your duty station, grade, and dependency status. Do not assume that promotion to E-5 makes full locality BAH payable. Use the housing allowance actually shown on your LES and obtain command release or CNA approval before treating off-base housing costs as part of your promotion raise.

If promotion releases you from government quarters, the housing allowance can account for most of the cash-flow increase, and it is not disposable income. You become responsible for rent and utilities, while 2026 BAH rates include 5% national cost sharing.

Basic pay and most bonuses are taxable. BAH and BAS generally are not, so annual military cash pay and allowances are not equivalent to the same amount of civilian taxable salary. Total military compensation can also include federal tax advantages, retirement accrual, health coverage, and other noncash benefits not included in these tables.

Reenlistment bonuses and special pays are not automatic at E-5

Promotion to E-5 does not automatically qualify you for a Selective Reenlistment Bonus. Your service must designate your specialty or category, you must fall within the applicable service zone, and an offer must be active on the controlling date.

Under DoDI 1304.31, SRB limits differ between the Regular and Reserve Components unless an approved exception applies.

ComponentLimit per additional obligated yearLimit for one SRBCombined career limit
Regular Component$30,000$180,000$360,000
Reserve Component$15,000$90,000$180,000

Each service publishes its own calculation rules. There is no universal E-5 multiplier.

Current statutory authority for agreements under 37 U.S.C. § 331 expires after December 31, 2026, unless Congress extends it. A service bonus message can expire or change earlier.

Where a service uses the traditional calculation, the formula is:

Monthly basic pay × additional obligated years × published multiplier

For illustration, consider an E-5 over 4 reenlisting for four payable years with a hypothetical 2.0 multiplier:

  • E-5: $3,946.80 × 4 × 2.0 = $31,574.40
  • E-4: $3,658.50 × 4 × 2.0 = $29,268.00
  • Promotion’s value within that example: $2,306.40

Do not use that 2.0 multiplier unless it appears on your service’s current message for your specialty and zone. The initial SRB payment normally should arrive within 30 days. After that, contact finance, your career planner, or personnel office.

No universal special pay begins solely at E-5. Assignment, qualification, skill, location, or hazardous-duty orders control eligibility. Promotion can increase a grade-based amount you already receive:

  • Submarine Duty Pay is $155 to $315 monthly for E-5, compared with $90 to $270 for E-4. At matching longevity points, promotion adds $5 to $65 per month.
  • Army Career Sea Pay is equal for E-4 and E-5 through three years of cumulative sea duty. After over four years, E-5 receives $13 to $117 more per month, depending on cumulative sea duty.

Special Duty Assignment Pay, flying pay, language pay, hardship duty pay, and hostile-fire or imminent-danger pay do not begin automatically upon promotion.

E-5 longevity increases stop after over 12 years

You move to the next rate only when you cross a listed service threshold. There is no separate “over 5” or “over 7” column. The annual amounts below assume 12 full months of active service at the stated rate.

Current E-5 bracketNext bracketAdded monthly payAdded annual pay
2 years or lessOver 2$255.30$3,063.60
Over 2Over 3$177.60$2,131.20
Over 3Over 4$171.00$2,052.00
Over 4Over 6$163.20$1,958.40

Over 8Over 10$95.40$1,144.80
Over 10Over 12$26.40$316.80
Over 12No later E-5 increase$0$0

E-5 reaches maximum 2026 basic pay at over 12 years. Check the service date on your LES, verify the correct longevity column after promotion, and obtain written housing authorization before treating BAH as part of the raise.
