A free Android tablet depends on a specific, funded offer. Federal phone and internet assistance does not automatically provide a tablet, and a service application is not a device reservation.

ACP tablet assistance has ended

The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) ended on June 1, 2024. Its monthly internet discount and connected-device discount are no longer available. There is no current ACP application or renewal.

Historically, ACP offered up to $100 toward an eligible tablet, laptop, or desktop computer, with a household contribution of more than $10 and less than $50. Old device lists, copays, and application steps describe that closed benefit.

What Lifeline does cover

Lifeline supports qualifying monthly phone or internet service. It does not provide a federal tablet purchase benefit. A provider may have a separate promotion, but the price, model, service requirement, and availability must be checked with that company.

Lifeline eligibility is separate: household income at or below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines, or participation in SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit, or specified Tribal programs. Former ACP enrollment does not automatically qualify a household.

Find device assistance separately

PCs for People and Human-I-T publish eligibility information for low-cost computers and other devices. Their prices, stock, and any donation opportunities are separate from Lifeline. Ask a school, library, or local community organization about loaned equipment or funded device assistance as well.

For schoolwork, ask whether your school district or college lends equipment. For a library device loan, check the loan period, internet access, and replacement charges. For a nonprofit purchase, confirm eligibility and the full price before submitting an application.

Questions to ask before ordering

  • Is the exact Android tablet in stock, and is it new or refurbished?
  • What are the upfront price, shipping cost, and required monthly charges?
  • Does the device use Wi-Fi only, or does it support the mobile network you need?
  • What are the warranty, return, and cancellation terms?
  • What is the stated delivery estimate, and how will the organization confirm your order?

No single approval time, free model, or activation method applies to all offers. Follow the actual manufacturer and provider instructions; some tablets cannot make ordinary phone calls or activate service by sending a text.

Applying for Lifeline service

If you also need help with phone or internet service, start with USAC’s application instructions. California, Oregon, and Texas have state-specific processes. After approval, choose a participating provider serving your address and complete enrollment with that company. Check the total monthly charge, data allowance, and any equipment cost before agreeing.

Keep the service decision separate from the tablet purchase. An organization may accept SNAP or Medicaid as evidence for its own device assistance, but that does not turn the device into a SNAP, Medicaid, or Lifeline entitlement.
