Eligibility for a free or low-cost laptop depends on the organization offering it. There is no single federal “free laptop eligibility” standard or nationwide laptop application tied to Lifeline.

Choose the program before gathering documents

A school may lend equipment only to enrolled students. A local grant may require residence within a city or county. A nonprofit may use income or assistance-program participation to decide who can buy a refurbished computer. Meeting one program’s rules does not establish eligibility for another.

For example, PCs for People lists qualifying-income routes and accepted assistance programs, including current Medicaid or SNAP participation. It requires photo identification and eligibility documentation. Approval permits an eligible purchase; it does not mean every computer is free.

Human-I-T also publishes low-cost device options and information about eligibility for additional savings. Check current pricing and availability with the organization before assuming a donated laptop is available.

Document checks

Use the actual program’s list. Depending on that list, you may need identification, current benefits evidence, income documents, student enrollment, or proof of residence. Do not assume every organization requires a Social Security number or accepts the same document types.

Check that the name, relevant dates, and other required information are readable. If an organization cannot accept a document, ask which alternative evidence it allows; an old benefit letter may not establish current participation.

Why Lifeline approval is different

Lifeline is a monthly phone or internet service discount, not a laptop purchase benefit. Lifeline eligibility is separate: household income at or below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines, or participation in SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit, or specified Tribal programs. Former ACP enrollment does not automatically qualify a household.

A provider may run a separate commercial device promotion, but the federal service rules do not guarantee its inventory or price. Apply for service because you need the service assistance, and confirm any device offer independently.

What happened to ACP laptop help?

The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) ended on June 1, 2024. Its monthly internet discount and connected-device discount are no longer available. There is no current ACP application or renewal.

Before accepting a device

Confirm whether you will own or borrow it, all required charges, warranty coverage, and return terms. If the machine is needed for a course or job, check its operating system and software compatibility before paying or joining a required service plan.
