Hennepin County residents have several places to seek computer access or help obtaining equipment. Availability depends on the specific program; living in the county does not guarantee a free laptop.

County digital navigation

The county’s computer and internet assistance page says residents who receive county assistance may be eligible for support. Ask your county caseworker to submit a Technology Needs Assessment referral. A digital navigator can then discuss technology, internet, or skills support suited to your situation.

This is a needs-assessment process, not an automatic laptop award. Explain whether you need equipment at home, internet access, or help using an existing device, and ask what is currently available.

Public computer access

Hennepin County Library offers computers and free Wi-Fi at its libraries, with tools for tasks such as forms, documents, and job searches. Check your branch’s hours and computer-use arrangements. Access to a library computer is different from receiving a laptop to keep.

Student equipment loans

Hennepin Technical College’s technology resources include a limited semester laptop checkout option for students. Eligible students should use the college’s request process and confirm stock, return dates, and responsibility for damage or loss. Other students can ask their own school about similar equipment loans.

Refurbished computers

PCs for People offers low-cost refurbished computers to qualifying customers. Its in-store information includes Minnesota retail options; confirm the store’s hours, current stock, and total cost before traveling. Current assistance-program participation or qualifying income can establish eligibility under its own rules, but a laptop is not necessarily free.

Service benefits are separate

Lifeline discounts qualifying monthly phone or internet service; it does not provide a federal laptop purchase benefit. The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) ended on June 1, 2024. Its monthly internet discount and connected-device discount are no longer available. There is no current ACP application or renewal.

Start with the local organization whose assistance fits your need. Confirm eligibility and whether equipment is donated, sold, or loaned before submitting personal documents.
