SNAP does not include a free-laptop entitlement, and SNAP food benefits cannot buy a laptop. An EBT card is a way to access benefits; it is not an application for a federal computer giveaway. The earlier version of this page incorrectly described an FNS laptop program and a laptop application through EBT.

USDA’s eligible-purchase rules exclude nonfood items. P-EBT was also food assistance and has ended; it did not create a current laptop benefit.

How SNAP documentation can help

A separate nonprofit may accept proof of SNAP participation when assessing eligibility for discounted computers. You apply to that organization under its own rules, pay any stated price, and receive whatever inventory it actually offers. SNAP does not fund the purchase through your food-benefit balance.

For example, PCs for People lists its eligibility and document requirements. It accepts current SNAP documentation as one qualifying route and asks for photo identification. This is a low-cost computer program, not a guarantee of a free laptop, a particular model or immediate stock.

Before ordering, check the total price, shipping, condition, operating system, warranty and return policy. A refurbished desktop without a monitor is not the same purchase as a laptop ready for school.

Ask locally about a loan before buying

Contact your school or college’s IT or student-support office and your public library. Ask whether they have a device-loan program, who can use it, whether the device may leave the building, and when it must be returned. Availability is local; do not assume every institution offers a device.

If a community organization advertises a donation event, confirm its eligibility rules, inventory and application address directly. Ask what happens if no devices remain before sending identity documents.

Internet service is a separate cost

Lifeline can reduce the cost of qualifying phone or internet service. It does not guarantee a laptop. The Affordable Connectivity Program ended, so old ACP device-discount advertisements are not current enrollment instructions.

Choose the computer first against the software you actually need, then compare the ongoing connection cost. Do not share your EBT PIN to qualify for a computer offer.
