An EBT card does not entitle you to a free tablet. SNAP food benefits cannot pay for electronics. SNAP participation may help establish eligibility for a separate service-discount program, but a tablet offer needs its own terms and a named provider.

Three programs people often confuse

ProgramWhat it can doWhat it does not promise
SNAP, accessed with EBTHelp buy eligible foodPayment for a tablet or other nonfood electronics
LifelineDiscount eligible monthly phone or internet serviceA government-issued tablet, particular model, or unlimited data
Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP)Previously offered broadband and device discountsNew benefits now; the program ended June 1, 2024

USDA lists nonfood goods among items SNAP cannot buy. An EBT card can also carry a separate cash-assistance balance in some programs; those rules are distinct from SNAP and do not create a free-device benefit.

USAC confirms ACP’s closure. Its former device subsidy should not appear in a current offer as funding you can still claim.

How SNAP can help with Lifeline

SNAP is one of USAC’s qualifying programs. Other routes include Medicaid and certain other benefits, or household income within the applicable limit. Qualification still requires an application and service enrollment.

The current Lifeline benefit can reduce eligible internet or bundled service by up to $9.25 monthly, with different support for voice-only service and enhanced support on qualifying Tribal lands. The discount is applied through a participating company. It is not a cash voucher for buying electronics.

What to ask a tablet seller

Before treating any advertisement as a real offer, obtain:

  • The company’s legal name and an independently located contact page.
  • The exact model, storage, condition, and whether the device is yours to keep.
  • The full upfront charge, including activation, shipping, and taxes.
  • The monthly plan price, high-speed allowance, hotspot rules, and what happens after the allowance runs out.
  • Whether accepting the offer transfers an existing Lifeline benefit.
  • The return, warranty, replacement, and cancellation terms.

An advertisement showing an iPad or Samsung tablet is not evidence that this model is available at your address. This guide has not verified a current $0 tablet offer and does not rank providers from unconfirmed inventory.

Practical next steps

  1. If you need cheaper internet service, use USAC’s application instructions and provider search. Oregon and Texas use state application routes linked there.
  2. If you already have a service plan and need only hardware, ask a local library, school, college, or community organization about an available loan or refurbished device. Confirm current eligibility and availability directly.
  3. If an offer requires SNAP evidence, use a current benefit notice when requested through the verified application process. Your EBT PIN is not proof a tablet seller needs.
  4. Save the written offer and order total before paying or transferring service. If no provider confirms an available device, do not submit an order based on a generic “government tablet” promise.
