The Emergency Call screen is not an official way to bypass a phone’s passcode. It exists so emergency help can be called from a locked device. Codes and repeated emergency-screen tricks are not a reliable recovery procedure for a current iPhone or Android phone.

If you forgot the passcode to your own phone, use the manufacturer’s recovery instructions. Recovering an Apple or Google account password and removing the phone’s screen lock are different operations.

iPhone: check the recent-passcode option first

On iOS 17 or later, if you changed your passcode within the previous 72 hours, Apple’s Passcode Reset may allow you to use the previous passcode and choose a new one. The option has device, network, and account requirements described by Apple. It is not available indefinitely and does not help if you do not know the previous code.

If that option does not apply, follow Apple’s forgotten-passcode instructions. The standard reset procedure erases the device. You can restore available backups afterward, but data that was never backed up may be lost. Apple Account access may still be needed to activate and set up the phone.

Android: follow the instructions for your model

For Pixel, Google says a phone that cannot be unlocked generally needs to be erased. Google’s Find Hub instructions describe remote actions and their requirements. Find Hub is not a service for revealing or replacing a forgotten current screen-lock code while preserving all local data.

A factory reset also removes locally stored apps and files. Backed-up information may be recoverable, subject to account access and backup protection. Device protection can require an account previously used on the phone after the reset.

For another Android brand, start with that manufacturer’s support page for the exact model. Recovery-button combinations and account checks differ. If it is a work- or school-managed phone, contact the administrator before resetting it.

Before you erase the phone

  1. Check whether you can access the associated Apple or Google account from another trusted device.
  2. Find out which backups exist and when they were made.
  3. Consider how you will receive verification codes if this is your only phone.
  4. Read the official reset instructions completely, including activation and account requirements.
  5. If you are uncertain, contact the manufacturer’s support team. Proof of purchase may be relevant, but support cannot promise to recover encrypted files without the required credentials.

Keep Emergency Call for emergencies

Do not dial emergency numbers as an unlocking test. If you accidentally connect to emergency services, explain the mistake to the operator rather than repeatedly calling or simply hanging up.

Once access is restored, keep recovery details current and enable backups. Biometrics are convenient, but the phone will still require its passcode in some situations, so retain it securely.
