There is no federal benefit that guarantees a free iPhone. Lifeline discounts qualifying monthly phone or internet service; any iPhone promotion comes from a provider and has its own price, inventory, and conditions.
ACP cannot fund a current iPhone offer
The Affordable Connectivity Program ended June 1, 2024. Its former connected-device discount covered eligible laptops, desktop computers, and tablets—not smartphones. Old “ACP iPhone” advertisements do not establish a current offer or application route.
Check Lifeline eligibility separately
A household may qualify through income at or below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines, or participation in SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit, or specified Tribal programs. See USAC’s complete rules, including the conditions for Tribal eligibility.
Former ACP enrollment does not automatically qualify someone. Lifeline’s service discount is up to $9.25 per month, or up to $34.25 on qualifying Tribal lands, depending on eligible service. The remaining bill depends on the actual plan.
Find a provider and verify the offer
Start with USAC’s Companies Near Me directory, then ask each company to confirm service at your address. A directory listing shows participation in Lifeline; it does not promise that the company offers iPhones.
For a specific iPhone offer, confirm:
- The exact model, storage, condition, battery information, and warranty.
- The upfront price, shipping, activation, taxes, and required monthly service.
- Whether a trade-in, installment plan, or bill credits are required.
- Coverage, data limits, device compatibility, unlocking, cancellation, and return terms.
A commercial carrier’s trade-in or installment promotion is different from Lifeline. Calculate the total required payments before treating an advertised zero-dollar device as free. An approved service application alone does not reserve an iPhone.
Apply for service and arrange any device order
Follow the official Lifeline application instructions; California, Oregon, and Texas have state-specific processes. Provide supporting documents only when requested for verification. You may not need to upload documents if the system can verify your information automatically.
After eligibility approval, complete enrollment with your chosen provider. Confirm any device purchase or promotion separately and use that company’s written order details for shipping estimates. There is no universal approval or delivery time and no promised iPhone model.
Set up a confirmed device
Follow the manufacturer’s setup steps and your provider’s activation instructions. The connection may use a physical SIM or eSIM, depending on the model and carrier. Ask the provider to confirm activation and number transfer before canceling your previous service.
If you already own a compatible iPhone, a bring-your-own-device plan may let you keep it. This can be worth comparing with the full cost and conditions of a replacement-phone offer.
If no iPhone is offered
Choose a plan and device based on your actual communication needs and budget. Lifeline eligibility can still help with service even when no free handset is included. Avoid applying through an old ACP page or assuming approval entitles you to an iPhone later.
