Lifeline does not include a federal free-laptop benefit. It helps eligible households pay for qualifying monthly phone or internet service. A provider’s equipment promotion is separate, and service approval does not guarantee a computer.

What Lifeline covers

The service discount is up to $9.25 per month, or up to $34.25 on qualifying Tribal lands, depending on eligible service. The plan’s actual charge, data allowance, and any included phone depend on the provider’s terms.

Lifeline eligibility is separate: household income at or below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines, or participation in SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit, or specified Tribal programs. Former ACP enrollment does not automatically qualify a household.

Start with USAC’s application instructions. California, Oregon, and Texas have state-specific processes. After approval, choose a participating provider serving your address and complete enrollment with that company. Check the total monthly charge, data allowance, and any equipment cost before agreeing.

Follow the current program rules for recertification, household limits, and use of a free service. These rules maintain a service benefit; they are not conditions for a federal laptop award.

Separate computer assistance

PCs for People and Human-I-T publish eligibility information for low-cost computers and other devices. Their prices, stock, and any donation opportunities are separate from Lifeline. Ask a school, library, or local community organization about loaned equipment or funded device assistance as well.

Students can ask their school or college about equipment loans. A caseworker or workforce counselor may know an active local computer distribution or grant. Ask whether the assistance is available to your household, whether you own or borrow the equipment, and what charges apply.

Why older articles mention ACP laptops

The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) ended on June 1, 2024. Its monthly internet discount and connected-device discount are no longer available. There is no current ACP application or renewal. The old ACP connected-device discount was up to $100 toward an eligible laptop, desktop, or tablet, with a household contribution of more than $10 and less than $50. It was not transferred into Lifeline.

Questions about Medicaid and SSI

Medicaid and SSI can establish Lifeline service eligibility, and a nonprofit may accept evidence of these benefits under its own rules. Neither status guarantees a laptop. Start with a named device organization and its current application, rather than a generic “Lifeline laptop” signup page.

Evaluate a device offer

Confirm the full device and service cost, stock, condition, warranty, shipping, and return terms. Do not accept a phone or smartwatch bundle as a supposed government laptop replacement unless it actually meets your needs and you understand the complete price.
