Washington WIC eligibility depends on more than income. The applicant must fit an eligible category, live in Washington, and complete the program’s nutrition assessment. This guide explains that screening; for local telephone numbers, use the WIC Clinics in Vancouver, WA: Phone Numbers and Appointment Steps.
Who can apply
Washington Department of Health describes WIC as serving pregnant, postpartum, or breastfeeding participants and infants and children under age five. A parent or caregiver may apply for an eligible child even if the adult is not eligible personally. U.S. citizenship is not a requirement.
The clinic assesses nutritional risk as part of enrollment. Meeting an income threshold alone is therefore not the complete application process.
How the income screening works
Washington’s published WIC income guidelines are based on 185% of the federal poverty guidelines. The current state table took effect July 1, 2026. Use the dated Washington income table to match household size and income frequency; a weekly paycheck and a monthly paycheck should not be compared to the same dollar column.
Participation in programs such as Medicaid, Basic Food/SNAP, or TANF may establish income eligibility. It does not remove the residence, category, or nutrition-assessment requirements. Ask the clinic which benefit notice it needs and how pregnancy affects household size for your application.
For example, if income changed after a job loss, bring the recent records and explain the change. Do not assume last year’s annual salary is the only information staff can review.
Prepare for the appointment
Washington’s application page explains how to find a clinic, arrange a visit, and prepare documentation. Before the visit, ask which records the clinic accepts for:
- The identity of each person applying.
- Your Washington residence.
- Household income or participation in a qualifying assistance program.
- Pregnancy, an infant’s feeding needs, or a transfer from another WIC clinic, when relevant.
If something is missing, contact the clinic rather than canceling without asking. Request an interpreter or accommodation when booking so staff can prepare. The state offers remote and in-person appointment routes; the clinic confirms what is available for your case.
What happens after approval
The clinic determines the food package for each participant and explains using the Washington WIC card. Benefits are assigned foods and quantities, not cash that can be spent on anything. Nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and health referrals are also part of the program.
