What to say when you call

Tell the clinic you want a new WIC appointment, who in the household is applying, and whether you need an interpreter or accessibility accommodation. Ask:

  • Is the appointment by phone or in person?
  • Which proof of identity, Washington address, and income or qualifying benefits should I provide?
  • Does the child or other applicant need to attend?
  • What should I do if I am missing a document?
  • How do I transfer an existing WIC case after a move?

Use Washington’s application instructions for the current checklist. The state says an initial appointment usually takes about 30–45 minutes; the clinic can explain the process for your case.

Eligibility and food benefits

Washington considers residence, the applicant’s eligible life stage, income or qualifying benefits, and a nutrition assessment. U.S. citizenship is not required. Parents, grandparents, foster parents, and other caregivers can ask about applying for an eligible child.

Read Washington WIC Eligibility: Income Rules and Your First Appointment for the household and income rules, or consult Washington DOH directly.

Approved participants receive specified food benefits and nutrition services. The package depends on the participant’s needs; WIC is not a cash payment or a flat amount awarded to every household. Your clinic explains the Washington WIC card and how to use the foods issued to you.
