The LAV crewman plays a crucial role within the LAR battalion, offering both driving and primary maintenance skills for all mission role vehicles inherent to the battalion’s operations. Additionally, they are responsible for mastering the utilization of various weapons systems, including the 25mm chain gun, the coaxial and pintle-mounted 7.62mm machineguns, and thermal optics on the LAV-25 variant. Their expertise extends to security and reconnaissance missions in support of the MAGTF, where noncommissioned officers are designated as vehicle commanders and LAV-25 gunners.

Their responsibilities encompass the following actions:

  1. Employing an M240 variant 7.62mm pintle-mounted machinegun to engage targets.
  2. Calibrating an M242 25mm automatic gun for precision targeting.
  3. Calibrating an M240 7.62mm coaxially-mounted machinegun for accurate fire.
