The reconnaissance specialist is a highly skilled infantry Marine, specializing in both amphibious and ground reconnaissance operations. In addition to possessing fundamental infantry skills, they excel in scout swimming, small boat operations, and demonstrate refined abilities in observation, scouting, patrolling, and long-range communication. These specialists undergo advanced training as static line and military freefall parachutists, and they also serve as jumpmasters. Additionally, they are trained as combatant divers and diving supervisors. Initially serving in the USMC reconnaissance unit, there is a potential for future assignments to the Marine Special Operations Command.

Their key roles and responsibilities include:

  1. Executing orders from the Platoon Commander.
  2. Serving as the primary insert/extract officer for reconnaissance operations.
  3. Acting as a watch officer in the platoon ROC / SARC during tactical operations.
  4. Planning and coordinating all supporting arms requirements for reconnaissance platoon, including artillery, mortars, naval gunfire support (NGF), and fixed and rotary-wing close air support (CAS).
  5. Proficiency in all aspects of supporting arms execution.
  6. Mastery of ground and amphibious reconnaissance techniques.
  7. Training platoon members in basic and advanced ground and amphibious reconnaissance skills.
  8. Assisting in the planning, coordination, and supervision of teams during insertion and extraction operations, including static line and military free-fall parachuting operations, surface swimming, helicopter rope suspension techniques (HRST), helocast, small boat operations, and combat diver operations.
  9. Proficiency in self-aid and buddy aid.
  10. Mastery of nautical and land navigation techniques.
  11. Qualification as a small boat coxswain for all craft used by the platoon.

Additionally, they carry out the orders of the Operations Officer and/or Commanding Officer, providing recommendations during the planning process related to reconnaissance and surveillance (R&S). They supervise daily work routines, oversee the establishment and displacement of the Command Operations Center (COC), and train and supervise COC Watch Officers.

Furthermore, they are responsible for the professional development and well-being of their team members. This includes preparing and supervising the issuance of warning and mission orders, conducting rehearsals, inspections, and insertion/extraction procedures for the team. They excel at briefing all aspects of assigned missions and tasks and are ultimately responsible for the successful completion of these assignments. They are proficient in the use of reconnaissance team weapons, communications equipment, and special gear, ensuring all team members are skilled in their specific reconnaissance duties. Additionally, they control all supporting arms requirements for reconnaissance teams, including artillery, mortars, NGF, and fixed and rotary-wing CAS. They cross-train all team members in the responsibilities of their peers and are adept in nautical and land navigation skills. They are also familiar with remote sensor operations, foreign weapons and equipment identification, and all aspects of supporting arms. They are qualified to conduct HRST operations as HRST Masters and are capable of performing self-aid and buddy aid when necessary.
