5812 - Military Working Dog Handler

Summary

A Military Working Dog Handler is a military policeman who is additionally trained to employ a military working dog, with on or off-leash directional control, in order to conduct searches of open areas, buildings, vehicles, and roadways, detect explosives or illegal drugs, locate missing personnel by tracking or scouting, and detect and/or apprehend lost or wanted personnel, and intruders.

Prerequisites

Must currently hold and maintain all prerequisites of PMOS 5811.

To protect against certain infections from dogs, handlers must have a spleen.

Must be a volunteer.

Military working dog handlers seeking an instructor assignment to Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA)-Lackland must possess an associate’s degree or have the ability to complete the required associate’s degree within the prescribed time from date of assignment.

Upon assignment, instructors who do not meet the requirement will develop an associate degree plan through the education service office.

This education requirement is the standard criteria for an instructor assigned to any Air Force owned courses, Community College of the Air Force (CCAF), as described in reference (dp), the most current version of the Memorandum of Agreement between each service branches’ Training Command.
