8058 - Acquisition Core Member

Summary

Assignment of the MOS identifies completion of statutory requirements for acceptance into the Department of the Navy Acquisition Corps (AC).

The purpose of the AC is to create a pool of highly qualified acquisition workforce personnel to fill critical acquisition positions (CAPs) and key leadership positions (KLPs).

As an integral part of the acquisition program, the AC is designed to develop highly qualified unrestricted officers through education, training, and experience to succeed as acquisition managers.

They plan, direct, coordinate, and supervise in either specific functional areas or in the total life cycle planning and acquisition of equipment/weapon systems.

Prerequisites

Security requirement: secret security clearance eligibility.

Must be DAWIA certified in any functional area.

Functional area certification requirements are contained in the current edition of the DON DAWIA Operating Guide.

Must have a baccalaureate degree or graduate degree from an accredited institution, with at least 12 credits in the following business related disciplines accounting, business, finance, law, contracts, purchasing, economics, industrial management, marketing, quantitative methods, leadership, and organizational management.

Must have at least 48 months of documented acquisition experience.

Up to 12 months of acquisition experience may be credited for completion of graduate studies at DoD-affiliated schools or other accredited academic institutions.

Education resulting in the award of sub-specialty code 5100P may be credited for a maximum of 18 months.

Education resulting in the award of sub-specialty code 5100N may be credited for a maximum of 24 months.

One educational substitution for experience is permitted.

Unrestricted line officers may count time in an O-5 or O-6 command tour (commanding officer time only) when responsibilities demonstrate program management competencies such as planning, execution, business acumen, resource management, and interface with the material establishment(s).

Requirements

All acquisition workforce members must apply via the APM (acquisition professional membership) module in electronic DON acquisition career management system (eDACM).

MOS 8058 will be processed at the same time as final approval of APM membership.

Duties

A DAC member may participate in an acquisition specific functional area as a portfolio manager, program manager, staff officer, director, product manager or team leader, assigned responsibility for management of equipment or weapon systems acquisitions.

The responsibilities may include all or part of the following tasks: program initiation, justification, and validation; cost analysis and estimation; system development project management; systems engineering management; test and evaluation management; integrated logistics support management; manpower and training systems management; life-cycle system support management; program financial management; provide planning, programming, and budgeting system support to acquisition program and appropriate USMC/USN appropriation sponsors; and program technical data and documentation management.
