8243 - Foreign Area Officer-Northeast Asia

Summary

Foreign Area Officers are officers who have completed graduate-level study of international relations, with an emphasis in regional studies appropriate to a designated region, are proficient in a foreign language and who have extensive in-country experience in a designated region.

This MOS may be assigned only as a FMOS.

It will be assigned and voided only by the authority of CMC (MM).

Prerequisites

Must have broad travel experience in the designated region.

Requirements

Security requirement: TS/SCI security clearance eligibility based on a tier 5 background investigation.

FAOs must certify their language proficiency annually in two of three modalities (listening, reading, speaking) through the Defense Language Proficiency Test and Oral Proficiency Interview.

FAOs who certify through the authorized testing procedures at or above the ILR proficiency level of three in two of three modalities may recertify every 2 years.

Display extensive knowledge of a designated region to include military forces, culture, history, sociology, economics, politics, and geography.

Performs in operational and strategic level Marine Corps, Joint, or Combined staffs in operations, planning, security cooperation, or intelligence billets; or within the Defense Attaché System (DAS).
