ABF Aviation Boatswain's Mate, Fuels
The Aviation Boatswain’s Mate, Fuels (ABF) is a Navy job that involves launching and recovering naval aircraft. ABFs operate and maintain aviation fueling and lubricating oil systems, including service stations, pump rooms, piping, valves, pumps, tanks, and portable equipment. They also observe and enforce safety precautions and maintain fuel quality surveillance and control.
To qualify for the ABF rating, individuals should: Work well with a team Be competent with tools and equipment Be aware of the need for safety information and procedures Be a U.S. citizen eligible for security clearance
ABFs can earn the advanced AB rating, which requires supervision of all individual specialties.
The ABF rating combines skill training, professional education, assignments, and voluntary education. As you progress through your career, skill training diminishes while professional military education gradually increases.
