STS Sonar Technician Submarine
The U.S. Navy MOS STS stands for Sonar Technician Submarine. STSs serve on all classes of submarines and specialize in combat-system equipment. They identify, track, and collect scientific undersea data used for boat defense and navigation.
STSs perform the following duties: Operate submarine sonar mainframe and auxiliary equipment Control, evaluate, and intercept sonar data from oceanographic equipment Coordinate submarine sonar and underwater fire control interface Employ environmental monitoring equipment Perform organizational and intermediate maintenance on submarine and allied equipment
STSs must meet the following requirements: Be U.S. citizens eligible for security clearances Have normal hearing and normal color perception Have no speech impediments Commit to an active-duty obligation of five years
STSs must also have the following skills: Ability to do repetitive tasks Ability to get along well with people Ability to perform operational tests and make external adjustments on equipment Ability to use schematic and wiring/circuitry diagrams Ability to troubleshoot and repair Ability to analyze, track, record, and report data
STSs require a high school diploma or GED.
