AME Aviation Structural Mechanic, Safety Equipment
The Navy MOS AME stands for Aviation Structural Mechanic - Safety Equipment. AMEs maintain and repair utility systems and safety devices on aircraft.
Their responsibilities include: Maintaining utility systems such as air conditioning, heating, pressurization, and oxygen Maintaining survival systems such as canopy ejection, life raft ejection, and fire extinguishing Maintaining safety belts, shoulder harnesses, inertia reels, and seat and canopy ejection systems
The AME rating was one of three main components of the Navy Aviation Structural Mechanic rating. In 2001, the AMS and AMH ratings merged into the current AM rating. The AME rating remained unchanged.
Aviation Structural Mechanics (AM) are responsible for all of the larger parts of naval aircraft, including wings, fuselage, tail, and control systems. Their ranks range from Petty Officer 3rd Class (E-4) to Petty Officer 1st Class (E-6).
