BM Boatswain's Mate

Boatswain’s Mates (BM) are the oldest rate in the Navy. They are responsible for maintaining the exterior surfaces of ships, cargo-handling, and small boats operations. They also train, direct, and supervise personnel in ship’s maintenance duties.

Some of the duties of a BM include: Conducting, directing, supervising, and training ship handling, anchoring, mooring, and towing operations Maintaining the exterior surfaces of ships Handling cargo Operating small boats during a number of evolutions including Anti-Terrorism Operations and Maritime Interdiction boardings of suspect ships Operating sound-powered telephone systems Serving as a member of damage control, emergency and security alert teams Participating in naval ceremonies

The BM rating requires a 60 month (5 year) service obligation.

To become a BM, you must: Have a high-school diploma or equivalent Be a U.S. citizen eligible for security clearance Possess good communication skills, including the ability to speak clearly

BMs are the leaders and backbone of every ship’s crew.
