CSS Culinary Specialist Submarine
Culinary Specialist Submarines (CSS) are a rating in the United States Navy. They operate and manage Navy messes and living quarters.
Their responsibilities include: Estimating the quantity and types of food needed Preparing menus Managing and accounting for food inventories Preparing and maintaining financial records Assisting Supply Officers in ordering and storing food items Checking deliveries for quantity Assisting medical personnel in inspecting food quality
CSSs receive extensive training in cooking, baking, dining, and living area management. They also provide food service for admirals and senior government executives, and run the White House Mess for the President of the United States. CSS candidates continue their training after “A” School at Basic Enlisted Submarine School.
