A line officer in the United States Navy is a commissioned officer or warrant officer who has general command authority and is eligible for operational command positions. Line officers are trained to take units into combat. They are trained in the combat roles of their branch, surface, submarines, or air wings.

There are two types of line officers in the United States Navy: Restricted Line Officer

These officers are designated for duties in aviation, engineering, aerospace engineering, or special duty.

Unrestricted Line Officer These officers are qualified to command at sea war-fighting combatant units such as: Naval warships Aircraft carriers Submarines Aviation squadrons SEAL teams Shore bases

Other Navy officer positions include: Chaplain corps Limited duty officers Ensign Lieutenant, Junior Grade Lieutenant Lieutenant Commander Commander Captain Rear Admiral Lower Half Rear Admiral Upper Half
