Navy Engineering Duty Officer-Ship Engineering (144X)

144X is a Navy officer designator for an Engineering Duty Officer (EDO) who specializes in ship engineering.

EDOs are unique to the Navy. They start their careers as Unrestricted Line (URL) officers, learning how to operate ships or submarines. They then obtain technical or engineering masters degrees.

To be designated as 144X, an officer must: Learn how to operate ships or submarines Obtain a technical or engineering masters degree Complete an oral examination Present the results of their Process Improvement Paper Complete the phase within two years
