What Bank of America looks for

Bank of America's Talent Acquisition team decides which résumés go to a manager, often without talking to you, so you "may not have the opportunity to verbally expand" on anything. The bank's FAQ says to make sure the résumé shows proficiency in each required skill, even if that means several versions. Its military development programs target junior officers, academy graduates and strong enlisted leaders, and some ask for a finance or STEM degree. Interviews then look at how your aspirations, character and values fit the culture.

Bullet formula: [Required skill from the posting, named] + [the accomplishment that proves you have it] + [a measured result]. Write it so it needs no explanation.

Do

  • Show proficiency in each skill the role requires. Bank of America says to do this even if you need several résumé versions.
  • Make every line count. You may not get to explain anything before a manager sees it.
  • Match the program's target profile. Put your officer, academy or senior NCO experience, your degree and your separation date where they're easy to find.
  • Show values and character in your examples. Interviews assess how they align with the bank's culture.
  • Keep your candidate profile current. Bank of America considers your résumé for other openings too.

Avoid

  • Don't assume a recruiter will ask about a skill you left off.
  • Don't send one generic résumé to both an operations program and a markets program. Make targeted versions.

Words from their postings
