What Boston Consulting Group looks for

BCG says its consulting interviewers look for five things: integrity, intellectual curiosity, creative thinking, a collaborative mindset and drive. The process runs from application to a skills interview, then case and team interviews for client-facing roles. BCG recruiters ask for a simple one-page résumé with a clear structure, since they need to pull out your story quickly. They'd rather see strong verbs and real achievements than adjectives, and they say gaps don't need a long explanation.

Bullet formula: [Strong verb] + [what you did and for whom] + [the result]. BCG's own advice is to use verbs, not adjectives, and let your achievements speak.

Do

  • Keep it to one page with a clear structure: education, work experience, language skills and personal interests are the sections BCG names.
  • Use a simple layout. BCG recruiters say fewer colors, pictures and icons make your career easier to follow.
  • Lead bullets with verbs, not adjectives, so you show rather than tell.
  • Tailor the résumé so it fits every BCG role you apply to at the same time.
  • Submit a PDF, not an editable Word file, and have someone else proofread it.
  • Show examples of integrity, curiosity, creative thinking, collaboration and drive. Those are the five qualities BCG's interviewers assess.

Avoid

  • Don't send your first draft. BCG recruiters warn that rushed applications have avoidable mistakes.
  • Don't over-explain gaps on the résumé. Save that for the interview.
  • Don't clutter the page with color blocks, photos or icons.
