What Cisco looks for

Cisco’s talent advisors say their first step is to confirm that the experience in the minimum qualifications is “evident (and measurable)” on your résumé. They also want professional certifications listed, as proof of skill and initiative. Cisco recruiters warn against generic résumés: keep a master résumé, but edit it for each job and include only relevant skills. Use bullets with strong action verbs, quantify achievements, and mirror the posting’s keywords, since résumé-scanning systems are common. A single page is typical in the U.S., per a Cisco recruiter.

Bullet formula: Strong action verb + what you did + quantified result (how much, over what time), mapped to a minimum qualification.

Do

  • Make each minimum qualification clearly visible and measurable (years, scale, certifications).
  • List every professional certification (CCNA, CCNP, Security+). Cisco advisors call out certifications specifically.
  • Edit your master résumé for each job and keep only the relevant skills.
  • Mirror the posting’s keywords. Cisco recruiters note that résumé scanners are common.
  • Show collaboration and continuous learning. Cisco advisors ask for real examples of both.
  • Use a professional email address and your own direct phone number (a Cisco recruiter pet peeve).

Avoid

  • Don’t write in the third person.
  • Don’t send a résumé written for a different job.
  • Don’t pad with words that say nothing. “This is not the place to be a politician.”
  • Don’t go past one page for U.S. roles unless the experience demands it.
