What Delta Air Lines looks for

Two members of Delta's Application Review Team read every pilot application. Competitive candidates then take an Aon online assessment, a panel interview at headquarters, the MMPI-2, and a virtual interview with a psychologist before receiving a conditional job offer. Delta's minimums are 1,500 hours total time, at least 250 hours PIC or SIC, and 50 hours multi-engine. It prefers 1,000 hours of fixed-wing turbine time, of which at least 500 must be in a non-powered-lift airplane. Delta also weighs the quality, quantity, recency, and verifiability of your flight time, the complexity of the aircraft, the types of operations, and turbine PIC hours.

Do

• Open with a flight-time summary that matches your logbook to the hour: total, fixed-wing turbine, PIC, SIC, multi-engine, instrument, night, and the last 12 months.
• Put turbine PIC and complex operations first. Delta explicitly weighs aircraft complexity, types of operations, and turbine PIC.
• List every certificate and rating: ATP (or ATP written plus aeronautical experience), Commercial with instrument, a first-class medical, and the FCC Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit.
• Account for every job and school since high school, and close any gaps. Delta provides an Applicant Timeline tool for this.
• Get letters of recommendation from colleagues, including current or retired Delta pilots, and update your application every month or two.
• Military pilots can apply up to 24 months before retirement or 12 months before separation.

Avoid

• Don't round up or pad your time. Delta asks for documentation of all flight hours and wants original logbooks at the interview.
• Don't count rotary-wing or simulator time as fixed-wing turbine. At least 500 turbine hours must be in a non-powered-lift airplane.
• Don't leave unexplained gaps between jobs or schools.
• Don't write the résumé in military jargon. Spell out aircraft, missions, and duty titles.
