What U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs looks for

VA posts its jobs on USAJOBS. Since September 27, 2025, VA has followed the two-page résumé limit, though VA Careers notes that Title 38 and Hybrid Title 38 roles are excluded. Every résumé needs contact information, relevant work experience, and relevant education, certifications, or licensure, and VA asks you to focus it on the duties and qualifications in the announcement. For former medics and corpsmen, the Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) program uses military medical training directly, with no additional licensure required. ICTs take vital signs, draw blood, place IVs, care for wounds, and coordinate patient discharge.

Bullet formula: Clinical task + setting and volume + standard + outcome: '[Performed] [skill] for [patient volume or acuity] in [setting], [outcome or quality measure]'. Use the same verbs as the announcement's duties list, such as vital signs, phlebotomy, IV placement, wound care, and discharge.

Do

  • Revise your résumé to focus on the experience and credentials that match the announcement's duties, requirements, and qualifications.
  • Put certifications and licensure (NREMT, BLS, ACLS) near the top. They're a required element of every federal résumé.
  • Include measurable accomplishments, such as patients treated, team size, or time saved, and translate military terms into civilian ones.
  • Keep a searchable résumé on USAJOBS, save your DD-214 there, and filter by the Veterans hiring path.
  • Ask a local VA Veteran Employment Specialist for help building your federal résumé and application package.

Avoid

  • Don't go past two pages for a Title 5 job. USAJOBS won't accept a longer résumé.
  • Don't describe care only in combat terms. Show the clinical skills VA lists, in the settings VA uses, such as emergency, primary, specialty, and surgical care.
  • Don't skip the details on your dates and hours. Each job still needs MM/YYYY dates and hours per week.
