What General Dynamics looks for

General Dynamics Mission Systems says its recruiters start with one question: does the candidate's experience match the job? Its résumé advice is to use keywords from the job description, design for easy scanning (bold relevant information, left-align content), order experience by relevance, and use numbers to show impact. GDIT, the IT and cyber business, says more than 25% of its employees are veterans. It takes SkillBridge interns in their last 180 days of service, some in cleared roles and some not. For cyber roles, show the certifications that DoD 8140 work roles require near the top.

Bullet formula: [Keyword from the posting] + [what you did, in civilian terms] + [a number that shows the impact]. Example: "Vulnerability management: cut open critical findings 72% across 1,400 endpoints."

Do

  • Use the job description's own keywords to show the experience you have.
  • Design for easy scanning: bold the relevant information and left-align content.
  • Order experience by relevance to the job and explain how your skills help the team.
  • Use numbers wherever you can to show the impact of your work.
  • Tailor each résumé to General Dynamics and the specific job.
  • For cyber roles, list the certifications DoD 8140 work roles require (e.g. Security+, CySA+) near the top.

Avoid

  • Don't leave misspellings, bad grammar or inconsistent formatting. GDMS lists them as red flags.
  • Don't leave large gaps in your job history unexplained.
  • Don't use acronyms from previous employers. Spell out military systems and programs.
  • Don't use empty, overused phrases like "Responsible for".
