Goldman Sachs recruiters say to lead with education, then relevant experience, and keep it to "absolutely" one page. They want your personality to come through in the content, not in color: what you've done, where you've led, what you volunteer for and what you care about. Any job counts if you quantify it. The best résumés let a recruiter find what they need fast, and a single typo can drag down strong accomplishments. The firm also stresses integrity, teamwork and hiring "the very best person for every job."

Bullet formula: [Where you led or what you did] + [context that shows your personality] + [a quantified result]. Recruiters say any experience can be "quantified to make it impactful."

Do

  • Lead with education, then relevant experience, as GS recruiters describe.
  • Stay on one page so the key points aren't lost when a recruiter flips through.
  • Quantify every role, even ones that seem unrelated. Recruiters say all experience can be made impactful.
  • Include volunteer work and interests. GS recruiters say they like to see how you help your community and what you care about.
  • Make the key facts easy to find, and have several people proofread.
  • Give yourself time. Recruiters compare the résumé to a paper you can't write overnight.

Avoid

  • Don't add a photo. Recruiters say it takes space they'd rather use to learn about you.
  • Don't use color to stand out. Let the content show your personality.
  • Don't send it with typos. They distract from even outstanding accomplishments.
