What IBM looks for

IBM’s careers blog quotes IBMers: highlight “your greatest hits” and the value you added, because “anybody can be given that same job description, but no two people will have the same outcome.” Write it like a magazine cover. Keep it high level, group tactical details into larger themes, and save some details for the interview. Use keywords from the job description and the vocabulary on IBM’s website. The résumé should answer “Why you?” IBM’s Apprenticeship Program focuses on skills rather than a four-year degree. After you apply, IBMers in your field review your application, and you may take coding or video-interview assessments.

Bullet formula: Headline result + the value it added to the team’s goal: “Based on my [analysis/action], [team/organization] achieved [measurable result].” This is adapted from IBM’s own before-and-after example.

Do

  • Lead each role with your greatest hits: what you did differently and the value it added.
  • Group tactical details into larger themes. IBMers suggest writing as if the CEO were reading it.
  • Use keywords from the job description and vocabulary from IBM’s website.
  • Show IBM digital credentials and SkillsBuild certificates. IBM values skills over degree paths.
  • Stay authentic. IBMers suggest showing how a hard period built a skill.

Avoid

  • Don’t copy your job description onto the résumé.
  • Don’t put every detail on the page. Leave something to talk about in the interview.
  • Don’t assume you need a four-year degree. IBM’s apprenticeships focus on demonstrated skills.
