What U.S. Intelligence Community (CIA, NSA, DIA, NGA) looks for

Intelligence Community agencies screen your résumé, education, previous jobs, and dates against the job's basic qualifications before inviting you to interview. If you're qualified, they make a conditional offer. Then comes the suitability and security process: the SF-86, a background investigation, and at some agencies a polygraph. The IC says this averages 9–12 months, and a clearance you already hold may not shorten it. NSA and NGA applications go through the IntelligenceCareers.gov portal, where the work history you enter in your profile is what HR reviews. CIA takes résumés only through MyLINK, and you must be physically in the U.S. or a U.S. territory when you submit.

Bullet formula: Keep every bullet unclassified. Describe the type of work, the scale, the method, and the result, never program names, sources, or locations: '[Produced/Led] [type of analysis or product] for [unclassified customer level] using [discipline or tools], resulting in [measurable result].'

Do

• Describe your experience in detail. The IC asks you to spell out relevant work and education so screeners can match it to the job's qualifications.
• Upload your DD-214, academic transcripts, and other supporting documents with your application.
• Start early. NSA asks military members to apply at least 12 months before separation or retirement, and the IC warns the process can take more than a year.
• List languages and analytic disciplines near the top, where HR screens first.
• Before the closing date, update your profile and resubmit. HR for jobs you already applied to isn't told about edits made after the posting closes.
• If you're retiring from active duty, plan for DoD's 180-day restriction on appointing retirees to civilian DoD jobs, such as NSA roles, unless a waiver is approved.

Avoid

• Don't put classified or controlled information on your résumé, including program names, specific sites, or targets. Describe the function and results instead.
• Don't post on social media that you applied to CIA or were invited to apply. CIA asks for discretion.
• Don't embellish or leave things out. The SF-86 review, background interview, and polygraph test your honesty, and polygraphs can ask whether you falsified security forms.
• Don't assume a current TS/SCI means you'll be fast-tracked. You still complete the full pre-employment process.
