Microsoft Resume Template for Veterans

The clean, easy-to-scan layout Microsoft recruiters ask for: a short elevator-pitch summary instead of an objective, a trimmed skills list, and bullets that show impact instead of duties.

What Microsoft looks for

Microsoft recruiters say a strong résumé “starts and ends with [clean] formatting.” They want wide margins, white space, and bullets, not blocks of text. Replace the old-school objective with a short introduction that works as an elevator pitch. Keep the skills section short and relevant. Show impact rather than job descriptions, and make your fit for the role clear. Microsoft hires against its values (respect, integrity, accountability, and a growth mindset) and expects candidates to represent their skills honestly.

Bullet formula: Impact over duties: [what you changed] → [measurable result], the way Microsoft’s recruiter example rewrites “sold cars” as “rolled out a new test-drive promotion, increasing fourth quarter sales of SUVs by 34%.”

Do

  • Use a clean, easy-to-read format with white space. Bold a few key phrases so they stand out.
  • Open with a short summary that works as an elevator pitch, not an objective statement.
  • Keep skills to the few that match the posting. Recruiters cite 3–4 line skill blocks as a mistake.
  • Line every section up with the job description so your fit for the role is obvious.
  • Show a growth mindset: new certifications, MSSA, and self-taught projects.
  • Mention passion projects with Microsoft technology (Azure labs, Power Platform apps, PowerShell modules).

Avoid

  • Don’t use an objective statement. It repeats that you want a job.
  • Don’t list every tool you’ve ever touched.
  • Don’t describe your job; describe what it took to do it well.
  • Don’t overstate. Microsoft expects honest representation from the résumé through the interviews.
