What Morgan Stanley looks for

Morgan Stanley's guide for veterans says to work out your skills first, then tailor your résumé to show how military work carries over to financial services. A Morgan Stanley recruiter's example: a line like "S4, NCO Brigade Officer in charge of synchronization, logistics and personnel" should become something like managing transportation for up to 1,500 people, with routes and departure schedules. The skills its veteran employees name are decision-making, leadership, determination, organization and focus and discipline. The firm's five core values are do the right thing, put clients first, lead with exceptional ideas, commit to diversity and inclusion, and give back.

Bullet formula: Translate, then quantify: [a business-language verb] + [scope: people, dollars, routes, schedules] + [how you organized or decided] + [the result]. Leave out staff codes like "S4".

Do

  • Map your skills to what corporate recruiters look for (decision-making, leadership, determination, organization, focus and discipline), then tailor each role to them.
  • Rewrite staff titles into business terms that show scope, the way the firm's S-4 example does.
  • Learn finance terms and the everyday office tools. Morgan Stanley names Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Research each firm's culture, and show how you put the team ahead of yourself.
  • Network widely. A Morgan Stanley veteran suggests having 25 conversations across companies and jobs.

Avoid

  • Don't list military staff codes or titles as they are. Recruiters say those lines need translating.
  • Don't undersell handling ambiguous, split-second decisions. Morgan Stanley veterans say many people do.
  • Don't aim only for roles that look like the military. The firm notes that operations suit new veterans, while flatter teams like risk need more adjustment.
