What USAA looks for

USAA serves only the military community, and its careers site says it values the leadership, resilience and adaptability veterans bring. Its résumé advice is to target each posting: "a resume is a tool" that summarizes your knowledge, skills and abilities in the posting's own language. It also warns that the hard part is explaining your skills to people who don't know the military. You need to drop the jargon, because what counts is "how you brought value to the group," not the job title. USAA's core values are service, loyalty, honesty and integrity.

Bullet formula: [Civilian verb] + [how you created value for your team or the people you served] + [the result], using the posting's own words, not military terms.

Do

  • Target the résumé to the posting, using its description and requirements in your own bullets.
  • Replace service jargon with plain civilian terms. USAA calls explaining your skills to civilians one of the biggest challenges veterans face.
  • Show how you brought value to the group, not only what your duties were.
  • Start with the Military Skills Match tool on USAA's careers site to find roles that fit your background.
  • Show service, loyalty, honesty and integrity through real examples. These are USAA's core values.
  • Talk to veterans who've already made the switch. USAA points to ACP, Veterati, USO, Hiring Our Heroes and FourBlock for mentors.

Avoid

  • Don't assume civilian recruiters know what your title or MOS means.
  • Don't send one untargeted résumé to every opening.
  • Don't expect your first civilian job to match your skills exactly. USAA notes many veterans find their first role doesn't, so aim for growth.
