Some reserve-component programs allow commissioning before degree completion.

Officer basic pay and potential high-3 pension are substantially higher in typical career progressions, but pay depends on grade and longevity, and promotion examples such as O-5 at 20 years are never guaranteed.

Enlisting first can lead to a commission, but enlisted-to-officer programs are competitive and can add years to the timeline.

Never sign an enlistment contract based on a verbal promise that you can commission later.

Enlisted vs. officer: the short answer

Choose enlisted if you want to enter sooner, learn a defined occupation, and spend more of your early career performing technical or operational work. Choose officer if you can meet the education requirement for your service and component, accept a competitive selection process, and want responsibility for personnel, planning, resources, risk, and mission results.
