0520 - Psychological Operations (PSYOP) Officer

Summary

PSYOP Officers plan and execute functions pertaining to military information support operations (MISO).

Influence Officer is defined as the trained personnel who primarily plan and conduct MISO, but can also, in certain contexts, conduct civil authorities’ information support (CAIS) and military deception (MILDEC).

MISO are planned operations to convey selected information and indicators to foreign audiences to influence their emotions, motives, objective reasoning, and, ultimately, the behavior of foreign governments, organizations, groups, and individuals in a manner favorable to the originator’s objectives.

Influence Officers capabilities are critical to the success of the marine air ground task force (MAGTF) mission, as they enable commanders to shape the information and security environment in their areas of responsibility (AOR).

This MOS will be assigned to unrestricted officers as a non-PMOS only by the CMC (MM).

This MOS will be transitioning completely to the 1707 PMOS.

Prerequisites

Security requirement: secret security clearance.

Must be currently in or have orders to fill a PSYOP Officer billet.

Captains or below of any MOS; and Majors or above will require concurrence from the MOS specialist.

Requirements

Complete an approved Military Psychological Operations Officer’s Course (A05M301), Ft Liberty, NC.

Complete the MAGTF Operations in the Information Environment Practitioner Course (MOPC) (N03F2G1), Norfolk, VA.

Any of these requirements may be waived by the Deputy Commandant for Information based on unique work or educational experience.

Duties

Assists in the development of USMC doctrine on MISO consistent with USMC policy.

Provides subject matter expertise to the development of USMC policy on MISO consistent with DoD policy.

Analyses target audiences, evaluates effects of MISO; and knows the techniques and methodology of MISO.

Develops MISO plans and advises the commander on the conduct of MISO for all operations, contingencies and exercises.

Coordinates with other combined and joint services and other government agency PSYOP/MISO organizations to meet mission requirements.

Conducts MISO as may be required or directed by the commander during all phases of operations.

This includes directly supporting forward deployed maneuver elements as a member a MISO detachment as well as supporting staff planning at the headquarters/command element level.
