4503 - Visual Information Officer

Summary

The Visual Information Officer (VIO) is the 45XX occupational field technical subject matter expert, specifically trained and experienced in the employment of organic visual information systems and training of 45XX personnel in visual information related disciplines.

Visual Information Officers are the principal advisor to commanders and Communication Strategy and Operations (COMMSTRAT) Officers on visual information matters at all levels.

They mentor the officers and Marines of the unit in all applicable mechanical, doctrinal and conceptual visual information matters, as required, to improve the general effectiveness and proficiency of 45XX personnel.

They assist in the development of training, exercises, and employment plans designed to accomplish mission essential tasks, achieve communication objectives and ensure individual and collective Training and Readiness task compliance.

They help design and vet the visual information management and production policies and disseminate information to the unit’s personnel regarding such policies.

They manage all visual information commodities organic to the unit in order to ensure equipment and unit readiness.

They aggregate and quantify reports on the unit’s technical proficiency and readiness.

They have oversight of the unit’s indoctrination and certification programs.

Additional duties include: developing annexes and appendices to operations orders; new equipment training; research and integration of emerging technologies and industry standards; vetting of draft training and readiness manuals; and participation in applicable operational advisory groups, course curriculum review boards, training task selections boards, and technology trade shows.

This MOS is technical in nature and requires extensive training, education, and experience to become proficient.

Prerequisites

Must meet eligibility and appointment criteria as prescribed in MCO 1040.42B, WO and LDO accession programs.

Must have a GT score of 110 or higher.

Security requirement: must possess secret security clearance; must meet sensitive compartmented information (SCI) eligibility guidelines based on a single scope background investigation/T5 investigation.

Must possess a school-trained 45XX (or legacy 43XX or 46XX) background.

Must hold PMOS 4591 with minimum of three-year experience as a 4591.

Must have graduated from at least one visual information technical course.

Eligible courses are limited to: Digital Multimedia Course (A18T4Z2); Intermediate Photojournalism Course (A1843E2); Intermediate Motion Media/Intermediate Videography Course (A18KCU2); Advanced Electronic Journalism Course (A18PNL2) all at DINFOS, Ft Meade, MD; or the Department of Defense-sponsored Military Photojournalism (MPJ) Course of study (C244661) or the Military Motion Media (MMM) Course of study (C2446P1), Military Visual Journalism program at S.I.

Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.

Must have graduated from at least one visual information management course.

Eligible course are limited to: Visual Information Management (A18M6N2) or Combat Camera Leadership Course (A18A412) both at DINFOS, Ft Meade, MD.

Requirements

Complete the Warrant Officer Basic Course (WOBC) (M02RMN4) within 18 months of appointment to WO.
